At Orchard Therapeutic Farm, we celebrate every unique family. Whether you’re from a traditional mum-and-dad household, a single-parent family, a family with two mums or two dads, or a home where grandparents are the main carers – you are welcome here. Our community is built on the belief that these differences are what make us stronger, and what make the world so wonderfully diverse.
Oxford is a city rich in culture and experiences, with people from all walks of life. We know that many of the children we support will grow up knowing LGBT+ family members, friends, and neighbours – and some will be part of same-sex families themselves. That’s why, at Orchard Therapeutic Farm, we work to make sure every child can see themselves, and the people they love, reflected in our space.
Our aim is simple: to create an environment where all children feel valued, respected, and understood, helping them grow up confident, kind, and open-minded. We know children thrive when they feel safe and accepted, so we start early – teaching about different family structures and the importance of inclusion from day one.
At Orchard Therapeutic Farm, no one has to hide who they are. We do not tolerate homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic language. Instead, we encourage children to:
Speak with pride about their own families.
Stand up for fairness and respect.
Appreciate and celebrate differences in others.
We don’t just talk about tolerance – we nurture empathy, allyship, and a genuine curiosity about the world. By doing so, we help children grow into compassionate, confident young people who value diversity in all its forms.
We embed diversity into our daily life and learning:
PSHE lessons that explore and celebrate the many ways families are formed.
LGBT+ History Month activities that inspire discussion, pride, and awareness.
A farm library stocked with books that reflect a wide range of families – including same-sex parents, blended families, and gender-diverse characters.
Functional Skills English lessons that feature LGBT+ characters, ensuring stories and examples feel relatable to every child.
From celebrating Pride to learning about trailblazing LGBT+ figures, we make diversity a living, visible part of our curriculum.
